The increase follows a €900 million gain in the previous reporting week, when the position reached €349.3 billion as of August 21, according to the European Central Bank’s consolidated financial statement.
The latest move therefore puts the Eurosystem’s foreign currency position roughly €1.4 billion above its mid-August level of €348.4 billion.
Foreign Currency Position Continues to Recover
Recent ECB data show noticeable week-to-week fluctuations:
| Reporting period | Foreign currency position | Weekly change |
| August 14 | €348.4 bln | -€0.5 bln |
| August 21 | €349.3 bln | +€0.9 bln |
| Latest | €349.8 bln | +€0.5 bln |
The latest increase represents a gain of about 0.14% from the previous week. The ECB reports the figure as the Eurosystem’s net position in foreign currency, calculated from foreign-currency assets after subtracting relevant foreign-currency liabilities. As a result, weekly changes can reflect movements in exchange rates as well as changes in the underlying assets and liabilities.
The increase does not by itself indicate a change in ECB monetary policy. Foreign currency positions are part of the Eurosystem balance sheet, while interest-rate decisions are driven primarily by the ECB’s assessment of inflation, economic activity and monetary conditions across the euro area.
Still, the latest figures show that the Eurosystem’s foreign currency position has moved higher for a second consecutive week, reaching its highest level in the recent reporting sequence.
